So, What Is Mofongo?

This mashed specialty is tropical, heartwarming and deliciously comforting. Mofongo might just be the most typical meal made with plantains in the Caribbean (and the world!), and it was born in Puerto Rico. Let’s talk about mofongo and its secrets.

Mofongo is a combination of plantains cooked until tender and mashed. The plantain purée is then seasoned with salt, garlic and a splash of broth (everyone has its special mofongo seasoning) and mixed with crispy pork cracklings or bacon. Press the mofongo into a mortar and pestle (pilón) or shape it into a ball and dig in.

“Mofongo is a Puerto Rican comfort food that can be as simple or as complicated as you want."

What Does Mofongo Taste Like?

Mofongo is a comfort food that can be as simple or as complicated as you want. Mofongo can be a hearty starter or the main course — it’s even street food if you know where to look. People make mofongo with green or ripe plantains, and they can combine the starchy purée with meat and even shrimp. No two mofongos are the same!

Dishes similar to mofongo include stuffed potatoes, loaded fries, cassava mofongo and other loaded mashed root veggies. Despite being a local delicacy, mofongo is rewardingly familiar!
